Now that the New Year is underway, it’s the perfect time to make some changes that will recharge your energy and lead to a more productive work life.

Create a distraction-free routine. Many successful business people will tell you that they reduce unnecessary distractions so that they can focus on what matters. Choose a “work uniform”, establish a simple breakfast routine, and reduce office clutter. Eliminate the unnecessary so that the important things receive more of your attention.

Eliminate negativity. Take space from negative people or situations that bring you down. You don’t have to “break up” with them entirely, but focus the majority of your time on interactions that feel good.

Take a social media break. Studies have shown that social media acts like a drug, prompting dopamine releases in our brains. Over time the effect wanes, leaving you craving another dopamine hit. The result is increasing dependency upon social media; while it feels good, it’s hardly productive. Taking a break can reset your dopamine receptors and help you avoid addiction.

Get moving. Exercise has been proven to boost memory and processing power, and contributes to a more positive mood. Build movement into your daily routine, and you will notice the quality of your work improves.

Prioritize sleep. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, you will eventually burn out entirely. Prioritize quality sleep by sticking to a routine, and the extra energy will pay off.

Laugh. Laughter really is one of the best medicines, and it works best when used as a preventive. Make sure you seek a few minutes of joy each day. The few moments spent watching a funny video or chatting with a friend will pay off through increased energy and boost to your mood.

Optimize your workspace. It’s difficult to concentrate and feel productive when your workspace is cluttered or distracting. Deep clean your office and establish boundaries to remove distractions.

Seek a change of scenery. Sometimes the best way to recharge your battery is to seek a change of scenery. Working from home can sometimes lead to feeling like you’re stuck in a rut, but luckily you have the freedom to work from anywhere you choose! Getting out of your pajamas and entering a fresh space will feel rejuvenating.
